City of Wheaton Fine and Cultural Arts Commission Tuesday, September 29, 2015 Minutes 1. CALL TO ORDER President Mike Bock called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. Those in attendance: Tony Asta, Bill Austin, Mike Bock, Dee Hicks, Greg Schreck and Kathy Young. Absent: Sarah Antas. Special guests included Wheaton North AP Government students: Josh Bock, Sam Reese, Mike Tomszak, Tim Hudson and Ethan Jordan. Other attendees: David Malone and Glennette Tilley Turner. `2. PUBLIC COMMENT Students commented that they were glad to be invited to this Commission meeting. 3. NEW BUSINESS A. It was moved and approved that the agenda be accepted with the addition of David Malone inclusion in the Abolitionist Event Discussion B. The minutes of March 24, July 27 and September 8 were approved. C. There was extensive discussion about what kind of event would be apropos to highlight Wheaton’s involvement with the Underground Railroad/Abolitionists. Ms. Turner enlightened us about area programs available, but nothing that was specifically Wheaton based. Mr. Malone has visuals of people involved with the movement. It was decided that the Commission would meet before scheduled meeting of November 24 to discuss the possibility of presenting a walking tour for students as well as adults that would start at Gary Wheaton Church and continue down Seminary to Blanchard Hall having stops to explain various historic facts about Wheaton’s involvement. i.e. Streets being named after free states. 4.
