3. New Business
A. Mike moved and Tony seconded to approve minutes from last meeting. Motion
passed.
Mike explained to our guests what the Commission does and how we are funded. We
would like to raise enough money and get matching funds for longer term projects like
"Room at the Table". We would like to encourage people to meet.
B. Leah shared her thoughts about the mural with our guests,Her plan is for the mural to
be about 5' tall and low to ground. She said it would be nice to reach it without
scaffolding. Rough idea is tree with branches and orbs and mineral designs from each
country represented. Leah would use about 15 people at a time, 45 people a day, for
about 7 days. Rachel Said she could get people from all different cultures in Wheaton
and/or DuPage Co. Leah said she would need about 40 hrs pre-production, 7 days to
paint, and 20 hrs post-production. Leah said we need concept, location, number of
possible participants. Leah will take some input as to design.
C. Room at the Table was explained by Tony, Greg and Rachel as a possible
community event to celebrate completion of mural. Goal is to acknowledge diversity.
Goal is for mural to be finished in August with celebratory event the end of September.
Mike said there are so many different nationalities in Wheaton that it would be nice for
this to start something bigger or regular. Leah said community art projects are a catalyst
to help build relationships.
D. Bill said we might have about $1000 in matching funds after Music in the Park. With
matching funds we should raise a minimum of about $3500 on our own. Sarah
suggested "passing the hat" at Music in the Park. Bill said this could be a possibility
after an announcement at the concert. Mike will check with the City to see if it's allowed
E. Dee said theater wall is too big for mural. Rachel suggested somewhere we could
build on the mural in the future. Tony suggested different areas around town.Greg said
we need to find a place that we can quadroon off safely for painting and event.
F. Rachel said her organization's goal is to bring people together, especially those who
would not normally get together.Tony suggested having whole process documented
somehow. Leah said she will have a packet ready by Tuesday May 31 explaining her
part of the project. Sarah suggested we get this out to newspapers etc as quickly as
possible and request donations. Sarah asked if we are allowed to have a "Go Fund Me"
page for the project. Mike will ask City.
