Old Business
-25th Anniversary of Historic Commission:
The Commission reviewed the invitation. An Ad Hoc committee of Nancy, Emelie, Maureen and Steph
was created. Possible refreshments were discussed including the issue of cake vs no cake, logistics,
hiring helpers, name tags, guest book, and having commemorative giveaways were also covered.
-Current projects:
WW1 Anniversary: The issues of finding speakers and the history of doughboy statue in Memorial Park
were discussed.
Railroad bollard: Steph led the discussion regarding the railroad plaque. The issues reviewed included a
larger copy of the new vertical design; the costs for new designs (no charge for the vertical version vs
about $125 for horizontal due to the need to create a new border and column split). It was decided to
use the new vertical design. Steph will get the layout changes made and a full sized draft to review.
1906 Captive Airship Photo: this has been uploaded to the Wheaton Public Library website. Steph
encouraged the Commission to check it out. Nancy will contact the DuPage County Historical Museum
about adding the 1882 Bird’s Eye View to the WPL website.
New Business
-Financial report: Nancy reported on the balance remaining in the Commission’s budget. She gave an
estimate of future FYI16-17 expenditures: the 25th anniversary celebration, the railroad bollard, and the
1882 Bird’s Eye View scan.
Commissioner Comments
-Barb recommended the traveling exhibit at the Glen Ellyn library Patios, Pools, & the Invention of the
American Backyard. She’d like to return to the focus on Dart next year, in addition to WW1. She thinks
it is a distinctive element of Wheaton. It was noted that it fosters an interest in all Mid-Century Modern
houses in town.
-Maureen had a question about landmarked homes in need of repair. It was agreed that this is out of
the Historic Commission’s purview and an issue for the city’s code enforcement officer.
Adjournment
Barb moved, Frank seconded, the motion passed unanimously, and the meeting adjourned at 8:20 pm.
