Minutes of the City of Wheaton Historic Commission
May 15, 2018 Meeting
Held at Robert R. McCormick Museum, Cantigny, Wheaton, Illinois
Attendance
Present: Barbara Dutton (Vice Chair), Nancy Flannery (Chair), Meaghan Jorgensen, Steph McGrath
(Secretary), Bob Purdy
Absent: Emelie Engling, Maureen Fogerty, Tom Kay, Frank Principe, Andrew Welker
Public present: Greg Heidrich, Heather Norton
Will Bulig, Robert R. McCormick Museum Interim Director, gave a tour of the 1st floor of the mansion from
7 to 8 pm.
The meeting was called to order at 8:00 pm.
Approval of Minutes
Approval of the April 17, 2018 meeting minutes was moved by Barb, seconded by Bob, and passed
unanimously.
Old Business
-Nancy distributed a draft of the FYI 2017/2018 annual report.
-Greg Heidrich expressed his interest in local history records, particularly less known sources such as church
and cemetery records. The Commission discussed use and promotion of these records in home history
research.
- Meaghan Jorgensen and Andrew Welker were unanimously approved as historic commission members.
-Nancy informed the Commission that Frank will not be seeking reappointment on the historic commission.
Appreciation for his service was expressed.
Preservation Month
-Nancy informed the Commission of problems with setting up the Wheaton’s Golf History Trolley tour.
-The Commission discussed correct placement of the Pride in preservation signs, parallel vs. perpendicular
to street, as well as closer to street vs. structure.
-Research on the vacant Christian Scientist church on Main Street is still pending.
New Business
-None
Commissioner Comments:
-Steph reported that an article about the history and sale of Ballyshear was recently published.
-Bob distributed copies of Preservation Magazine; shared highlights of a Wheaton Park District Chicago
Barons tour, and discussed the history of Wheaton’s driving park
-Nancy informed the Commission that Ashley Downing, Curator at the DuPage County Historical Museum
will be leaving her job there in the near future.
Adjournment
Steph moved to adjourn, Bob seconded, and the motion passed unanimously. The meeting adjourned at 9
pm.
