Minutes of the City of Wheaton Historic Commission July 17, 2018 Meeting Held at City Hall, Wheaton, Illinois Attendance Present: Barbara Dutton (Vice Chair), Nancy Flannery (Chair), Emelie Engling, Meaghan Jorgensen, Steph McGrath (Secretary), Bob Purdy, Andrew Welker Absent: Maureen Fogerty, Tom Kay The meeting was called to order at 7 pm Public comment: Erica Loiacono, Director of Public Relations for School District 200, spoke about plans for marking Lowell School’s 100th anniversary and sought advice on researching the school’s history. Several commissioners gave Ms. Loiacono advice on potential resources to help them tell the school’s story. Approval of Minutes The minutes of the May 15, 2018 and June 19, 2018 meetings were approved as amended on a motion by Meaghan, seconded by Bob and passed unanimously. Old Business -Wheaton’s Summer of Golf: Nancy gave a report on the standee cutouts of Charles Blair Macdonald, James Foulis, Bessie Anthony, and J. Anna Carpenter and their relationship to Wheaton’s golf history. The large cut outs of these golf figures have been traveling to events. Nancy also recapped the four golf trolley tours held by the Historic Commission. The golf historic sites map is still in process and will be made public when completed. The 13 large golf balls placed around town by the Wheaton Fine & Cultural Arts Commission were discussed. Nancy will give a talk on Wheaton’s golf history at the Mary Lubko Center on Wednesday, August 15th. -Historic site markers update: Meaghan informed the Commission that she is waiting for a response from her Union Pacific Railroad contact; also the remount of the Original 10 Blocks historic site marker will be ADA compliant. New Business -Nancy passed around the updated contact list for commission members. -Bike fest this year will be held on August 11th; due to scheduling problems, members of the Historic Commission will not be able to set up a table at Bike fest. It was agreed to skip participating this year, but commissioners discussed creating self-guided history bike tours around themes for next year. Barb will check on her past effort to develop a historic bike tour map with the Bike Commission. Commissioner Comments: -Barb went to Arrowhead for the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Arrowhead golf exhibit. -Steph suggested questioning mayoral candidates on their views on preservation, in writing or inviting them to a meeting. -Andrew is interested in creating an interactive map of locations around the area with historic significance. Adjournment Bob moved to adjourn; Meaghan seconded; the motion passed unanimously, and the meeting concluded at 8:10 pm.
